Communication revolution - good or bad?

21st November 2011 15:44:22

This week, I’ve been pondering how many different ways we communicate these days and whether all this choice is good news or not.  There’s…

  • Text and SMS
  • Email
  • Skype
  • Facebook, Twitter and other social media
  • Online forums
  • Mobile calls
  • Landline calls
  • ‘Snail Mail’
  • Good old fashioned face-to-face
  • Has fax died?

…and, everybody seems to have their preferred option.

But, with many more channels of communication, have we got better at communicating?  I don’t think so –  the quicker and more remote the communication, it seems the greater chance the message can be misunderstood.

Sociable:  fond of the company of others, says my Chambers dictionary.  So does all this communicating make us more sociable?  The way I see it,  the answer’s ‘no’.  In fact – as more and more people communicate and entertain themselves on-screen and in the home - it seems to be quite the opposite.  What a shame..
