Over-breeding and in-breeding of horses comes under the spotlight this week

13th December 2011 19:45:45

I have constantly banged on in my blog about the problem of over-breeding and in-breeding of horses and all the implications for horse welfare at the end of the day.

In this week's Horse and Hound magazine, there's a feature about the crash in prices of New Forest foals, who were going for as little as 8 guineas at a recent sale.  The worry, of course, is where do they all end up? But, in the long term, if it does deter future over-breeding, then that is one good that could come out of it.

In the same week, my partner sent me a link to the blog of BBC Nature's Editor, matt Walker, who throws out the question whether racehorses are being bred for destruction.  At last, some intelligent, unbiased comment on the issue:  BBC Nature Editor Matt Walker  http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/wondermonkey/2011/11/bred-to-destruction.shtml
