On Saturday 20th November a group of eleven children in Years 3-6 from St Margarets Preparatory School in Calne joined other children from local schools to attend the Devizes Junior Eisteddfod. It was the first time that the school has taken a group of musicians to the festival, which specialises in music, speech, art and literature.
The festival took place at various venues around Devizes - Sheep Street Sanctuary, St Johns Sanctuary, Town Hall Assembly Rooms, St Andrews Sanctuary and the Wharf Theatre. In addition to the music classes held throughout the day, the festival also included mime classes, drama classes, musical theatre, scripture readings, news reading and art classes.
Our group of eleven children performed nineteen items ranging from piano solo and duet, violin, flute, recorder and saxophone. Charlotte in Year 4 won a cup for her piano performance and Rachel and Felicity in Year 6 won a cup for their recorder duet, while Archie won his violin solo in the 11 and under category. All the children received certificates - many with Merits and some with Distinctions. The children who were awarded Distinction were invited back in the evening to play at the prize-winners concert at Devizes Town Hall, where the prizes were presented by the Mayor.
Despite getting lost in Devizes on a wet and cold day, the children performed beautifully and thoroughly enjoyed themselves! We hope to return next year with even more entrants. Thank you to everyone, especially the parents who came along to support the children.
